Carl Corey – On Ice

On Ice ©Carl Corey
When I saw Carl Corey’s series On Ice it brought on a bit of nostalgia. And not because I enjoy ice fishing or because I used to ice fish but because when I drive back to the ol’ home front we follow the Ottawa river where the fishermen and fisherwomen’s huts are erected on the frozen water. Unsheltered and minuscule compared to the vast landscape surrounding them, even if they are out in the open for everybody to see, the shacks seem lonely, uninviting, cold and desolate.
Corey’s series evokes all of the typical traits of ice fishing but somehow brings warmth to his subject. He makes the desolate livable and charming, he even creates a hint of humor through the chilling air. His series is fabulous.
