Claire Martin – Downtown East Side

Vancouver’s downtown East side is notorious for it’s drug users, poverty, sex trade and crime. A good documentary film about the East side is called Through a Blue Lens from the NFB. Photographer Claire Martin has infiltrated the scene and has captured the people that make the area their home. First social worker, Martin switched to photography. This image is part of her series Downtown East Side. You can also find more of her work on Flickr.

What a great series of black & white shots … I’m always quite impressed when I see photographers like Claire that manage to get this level of intimacy with their subjects. It really makes for great photography.
