Todd Hido

I think Todd Hido is one of the greatest night photographers. It’s one thing walking around, photographing a deserted city at night, but Hido takes it to an entirely new level by standing out in front of a well lit and lived-in house in the suburbs…that doesn’t look suspicious at all! Sometimes night photography can be a bit overbearing in the sense that the colours and light can be too aggressive or too sharp. Hido works mainly in diffused situations on foggy or misty nights, letting the light melt out of the houses and allowing the transitions of light to darkness to stay soft and appealing, almost soothing.
With Hido’s work, he plays on the voyeurism but it’s dignified in the sense that he’s far enough from the people to not actually see into the houses but close enough to let the viewer question - what type of people live there, what do they do, what are their worries, their troubles and their pleasures.
The angle, the distance and the entire feeling of the image really makes you wonder what is behind those walls.
Here’s a really interesting interview with Hido.

wow, what an awesome piece… thanks for sharing!
Thank you. I had seen Todd’s work once before and loved it, but couldn’t remember his name. It was one of those things that surfaced every now and again but I couldn’t remember who he was. Thanks for refreshing my memory. Keep up the good work.
